March Madness has always been a major event in our family; we take our brackets seriously. 🦷 would always swipe the sports section of The New York Times from 🧬 to make her picks, while K8 dove deep into team research. Meanwhile, I'd often just hit the random button until I found some cool-sounding schools. But as I grew older, I realized how fiercely competitive this bracket challenge was, and I was determined to beat 🦷 because she always seemed to win the pool!

The March Madness bracket frenzy kicked off back in 1977 at a bar in Staten Island. Just 88 people huddled up to predict the tournament outcome and compete for prizes.

Fast forward to 2006, and that same Staten Island bar was swamped with 150,000 participants, eyeing a jaw-dropping $1.5 million prize pool. The Feds had to step in and shut down the unofficial showdown, but the bracket tradition had already taken root.

This year, millions are gearing up to fill out their brackets, even though the odds of nailing every single pick are a mind-blowing one in 9.2 quintillion.

Why is March Madness called “The Big Dance”?!

Marquette basketball coach Al McGuire famously said, "you gotta wear the blue blazer when you go to the big dance." McGuire sported a bright blue blazer throughout Marquette's winning season, and this superstition paid off. Marquette clinched the March Madness championship in 1977, solidifying the legend of "The Big Dance."
